Genesis 25:1-11 (ESV)
25 Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan; the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.
5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. 6 But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east. 7 Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, 10 the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.
Promises God made Abraham:
“I will make you a great nation”
“I will bless you and make your name great”
“You will be a blessing”
“I will bless those who bless you”
“In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed”
“To your offspring I will give this land”
“All the land you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever”
“I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth”
“I am your shield, your reward shall be very great”
“Your very own son shall be your heir”
“If you are able to number [the stars], so shall your offspring be”
“I…brought you out…to give you this land to possess”
“Your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there…they will be afflicted for four hundred years”
“I will bring judgement on the nation that they serve”
“Afterward they shall come out with great possessions”
“You shall be buried in a good old age”
“They shall come back here in the fourth generation”
“To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates”
“I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you”
“I will be their God”
“Kings of peoples shall come from [Sarah]”
“I have blessed [Ishmael] and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly”
“Sarah your wife shall have a son”
“I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven”
“Your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies”
“In your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed”
God called Abraham
• You and I are no different. God has called us, not based on what we’ve done but because of who He is. We need His grace, over and over again. We don’t get to a point where we have it figured out
God transformed Abraham
am I the same today as I was the day before I gave my life to Jesus? Where is the fruit in my life that the LORD is producing?
Abraham commemorated the good works of God
• God is doing something in your life, right now. Maybe it’s obvious, maybe only you know what it is. What are you doing to remember the good works of God? How are you giving praise to God, for what He did in your life this week, this month.
Abraham was a friend of God
James 4:8 says “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you”.
Is anything too hard for the LORD?
• Abraham saw God restore the fertility of his wife. He saw God bless him in his interactions with the Canaanite kings. He saw God provide a sacrifice on Mount Moriah in place of his son Isaac. Abraham had hope in the God that provides.
We have hope in Christ Jesus, that all nations would be blessed, made holy, through the overwhelming grace of God.
